Once you have a blog set up, (if you don’t go here) you will want to make it pretty!!! Even if you are the best writer in the world, if your blog is not initially attractive, you can lose your audience. Most professional bloggers (by professional, I mean the ones making a steady income) tell you that you need a Genesis Framework and child theme from Studio Press.
Unfortunately these places can cost an arm and a leg. Since I did not have an arm or a leg to sacrifice quite yet, I went to Etsy and I found my child theme for $15.00 and it included Genesis
Things to look for when searching for your theme are:
Child Theme built for Genesis Frame work
And make sure detailed instructions are included
There are other ways to do this but this is the path I took and the only way I know, but I will say that Genesis is highly recommended by most bloggers.
My theme came with very comprehensive, step by step instructions, but here is a rundown of them
After you make your purchase, download the zip file containing your theme onto your computer.
Login in to your WordPress dashboard…remember your URL from step 7 in this post.
Go to appearance and then themes
Upload Genesis zip file first
Go back to appearance and then themes
Upload Theme zip file and activate it
When purchasing a theme and Genesis from anyone outside of the actual Genesis Company, be sure to check their feedback and make sure it is a responsive theme!
Once everything has been installed, you will want to install your header. My theme came with a header so I emailed the creator and she configured it for me with my blog name and emailed it to me. FYI-I emailed her several times and she was very helpful.
So the step by step to install your header…
Go to the appearance tab
Then header Image
Add New Image
Find your header
Save and Publish
Now you should have a cute little blog with a cute little header unless you happen to be a random man reading this in which case you have a cool blog with an awesome header.
Now for the important plug-ins
(In my mind, a plug-in is like an app on your phone…that may not even be close to what it is but don’t burst my bubble)
Go to plugins on the left side of your dashboard and select add new after you install the following plugins hit activate.
Important plugins to install are:
Jetpack-This has several characteristics. It provides security. It tracks your traffic and has some tools that you can use while customizing your website.
Yoast SEO-this helps out with configuring your website to show up better in search engines.
Akisment– This protects your website from spam.
Genesis Simple Hooks-this is where you can add HTML codes to show up on your website
Genesis Simple Share-this adds your social network buttons to your posts
Google Analytics-this also tracks stats on your page, but you have to create an account at Google.com/analytics. Once you have an account, they will give you a code. Go paste this code in your Genesis simple hook section under the “genesis after” section.
Now check out your blog…I bet it is SUPER CUTE!!!
