Let’s talk about clothes. Specifically, let’s talk about fat clothes.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m a big girl. I’m fat, curvy, plus, whatever label you want to put on it. And honestly, after 27 years, I’m loving this body God gave me. I eat well 90 percent of the time – Connie’s Custard and The Shack burgers are my weakness – and I actually do love to workout.
But being bigger than your average person has one distinct drawback – fashion. Well, at least it used to. Growing up with thunder thighs meant you shopped in the old lady magazines. It was brutal. So when I grew up, I searched and I found this community of body positive clothing companies who were all too willing to outfit my curves in delicious fabrics.
And I’m not talking about Lane Bryant. No disrespect to the LB – I’m a lifelong customer – but I swear on all that is holy, can you slow down with the dang rhinestones? I already dominate a room. I don’t need to shine like the second coming of our Lord and Savior too.
If you got a booty (MANDY, COUGH COUGH) or a little bit extra around that midsection, let me drop some fashion knowledge on you. It’s time to fill those closets, ladies. The skinny girls don’t get all the fun.
The Brits have been on the extended sizes wagon for a lot longer than us Americans. This company is my LIFE. Yes, they are a bit pricier, but honestly they are not any more expensive than Lane Bryant and the style aesthetic has a much broader range.
I’m more than a little salty that ON doesn’t carry plus sizes in their stores but it didn’t stop me from getting a credit card and dropping fat cash on them regularly. I get easily 75 percent of my wardrobe here. Why? Because I’m a comfy cotton kinda girl. I don’t like gregarious patterns and I like a simple cut. Basically I’m soccer mom chic before the minivan and ya know, husband. Bonus, you can return in store. So that’s pretty great. And it’s hella cheap.
Bless those little hipster hearts. I love Modcloth because you won’t find the word PLUS on there. It’s extended sizes, y’all. And almost everything comes in an extended size and is fresh to death. If you’re into the vintage vibe, Mod is the place for you. I feel so Zooey Deschanel after an hour on that site.
This is a new find for me. I’m obsessed with the founder and the clothes on here are literally SO DAMN CHIC. Like I might not be cool enough to pull anything off but I have mad respect that they say “you want a tight bodycon dress? GIRL WE MADE YOU ONE.”
Torrid is on the same vibe as S+. I love that you can get a bikini because guess what the secret to a bikini bod is? Put a bikini on your body – BOOM – bikini body.
