Step 1 – Declutter
OK all my motivated friends, lets get organized!
My very first suggestion to getting and staying organized is to get rid of everything that you do not need or love (plus some) and declutter your home and life.
This is a step that a lot of people have a really hard time with; but once you take the plunge, and get rid of it, the liberating feeling that replaces all of that junk is so worth it. Here is a Purging List to help you get started.
So for today, I want you to find 50 things to get rid of (yes I said 50!!!)
Get a trash bag and a donation bag and get to work. Don’t worry about cleaning anything; just start chunking. Yes, it is OK to throw away that dreadful clock that your great-grandmother gave you. Then immediately take the donation bag to your local goodwill, advertise it on Facebook for someone to pick up, or give it to someone you know could use it. Don’t leave it in your house!
There is always the option of a garage sale, but I only recommend this if you have every intention of having a garage sale in the near future. Don’t put it in storage, with the intent to have one, and 2 years later, it is still cluttering up your life! If you are going to keep it for a garage sale then pick a date and plan it now.
I do suggest selling your valuable items that you no longer want on eBay. Check out my list of things that sell on eBay.
After you have done that, I want you to check out my good friend Terryn’s blog, Just A Simple Home. She has an amazing 31 day decluttering challenge that you can find here. She will go into more detail about decluttering different areas of your home and life in just a few minutes everyday.
I love this challenge and am currently doing it myself. She cover spaces that you don’t even think to declutter!
Trust me, this step is imperative. The less stuff you have, the less you have to worry about and the less you have to clean.
Decluttering will probably take you longer than future steps, but every good building begins with a good foundation.
Ahh…Don’t you feel so much better?!?!?!
Now tell me what you threw away 🙂
