A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating a Starting A Blog
Are you ready?
Creating and managing a blog, has become a very popular way to make some extra cash, especially for moms. For people, like myself, who love to write and talk about themselves, what better way to earn a little extra than doing something fun!
Don’t believe it when they say starting a blog is easy.
My goal here, is to make it as easy as possible, for you based on some complications I came across. I had 7 panic attacks, a crying fit, a blood pressure explosion, and I pulled all of my hair out. Ok, so none of that really happened but it was a bit frustrating.
Big Dreams in Blogging
I piddled with the idea of a blog and what to write for about 2 months before actually jumping in. It first caught my attention when I got involved in budgeting and getting out of debt. I knew this was going to be an adventure but I was ready!
I had to bring my sister along with me for this. For one, I didn’t have the slightest idea what I was doing, and second, I just love how she writes and I had amazing visions for our partnership. Together we were going to be the next J.K. Rowling…yeah sometimes I like to reach for the stars!!! Low and behold, my sister was completely tied up for the next few weeks, so there I was, all on my own.
It’s ok Mandy, you can do it!!!
Content is Key
My initial step was recording my thoughts in a Microsoft word document. So many people go through all the steps of setting up there blog and then draw a blank when it comes to their first post. I originally had a blog through blogspot.com and I never kept up with it, I couldn’t think of what I wanted to write and looking back at it, it was just absurd. When embarking upon this idea, I had more of an idea of what I wanted to write about so anytime a thought came to mind, I would jot it down.
Jumping in With Both Feet
When I finally decided to take the plunge, I read through several different websites on how to start a blog. THERE ARE A LOT. The general consensus was that I needed a host if I wanted to be rich and famous…ok maybe not rich or famous…there goes those BIG DREAMS!!!…but if I wanted to make money I would definitely need a host.
Most bloggers that I read used Bluehost.com as their host. Every time that I tried to pull up their page I would get a response that said The www.bluehost.com page isn’t working.
I decided to go through SiteGround.com after reading several good reviews on them. It was a nightmare because I had no idea what I was doing. What the heck is a DNS Server?!?!?!
There were several websites that offered step by step instructions for setting up through Blue Host but I could not find any help on setting up through Site Ground. After a couple of hours of reading through a bunch of computer language that I did not understand and deciding that I was just going to delete the whole thing, I finally just called someone!
WARNING!!! THIS “HOW TO” IS FOR BEGINNERS LIKE MYSELF!!! INSTRUCTIONS MAY SEEM JUVENILE TO THE MORE EXPERIENCED BLOGGER!!! PLEASE REFRAIN FROM ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON MY INTELLECT!!!
Let’s Get Started
I know that there are a lot of “how to’s” out there but here is mine. Grab a cup of coffee <—- very important step… and let’s get started.
Before you even start, sit down with your good friend Microsoft word and jot down some ideas, (just to make sure that you have plenty of ideas) next start a new email address just for your blog
On your mark, get set, go…
(I found out that less info is best at first…I think I had info overload and still suffer from it!!!)
Choose a plan (I chose the cheapest plan, The StartUp plan for 3.95/month)
Since we got a domain in step one; you will want to select “I already have a domain” and enter you domain name.
Enter all of your information and checkout (my grand total for an entire year was 47.40)
Go to your email and there should be an email notifying you of your user name, click the red button that says “login to customer area” and enter your login info
Under “Get Started” on the right side of your screen select “WordPress Tutorial”, then “How to Install WordPress” …you can either follow the 4 step process or you can select the “Get Hosting + Free Install” (orange button) after a failed attempt at doing it myself, I had SiteGround do it for me. FYI…they are super duper nice and if you dont want to call you can just hit the chat button on their website and they can help you with anything.
Go back to your email and you should have an email that says ” We have successfully installed the WordPress software on your hosting account” and it will have your Admin URL, Username, and Password.
AND THIS IS WHERE EVERYTHING FELL APART FOR ME!!!! WHAT DO I DO NEXT!!! WHERE DO I GO NOW?!?!?!? POUNDING HEAD ON DESK!?!?! SOME TEARS!!!!THOUGHTS OF JUST GIVING UP…THE EMAIL SAYS TO GO TO http://tumbleweedsandbigdreams.com/wp-admin/ BUT ALL THAT IS PULLING UP IS “THIS PAGE IS IN THE WORKS”…THEY SAID THERE WOULD BE A PLACE TO LOGIN!!!I DON’T SEE A PLACE TO LOG IN!!!SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!
2 hours later…
Step 9 (very important)
Go back here Hover…log back in…under “your account” select domains…beside “Nameservers” click the edit button and you will want to enter this…
ns1.us21.siteground.us (in place of ns1.hover.com)
ns1.us21.siteground.us (in place of ns1.hover.com)
This is for SiteGround only…different hosts will have different nameservers.
Then hit SAVE.
If you wanna know all the reasons behind this go here Blah blah blah
***This step could take up to 24 hours to make the change and there is nothing more to do in the meantime. Go grab another cup of coffee!!!
***And we are back
Ok so your blog is up and going…kinda. When you type in your URL now you should see this
Enter your login information and it will take you to your WordPress Dashboard!!!
And there you have it…your own blog!!!!
Don’t get me wrong though, you’re not out of the woods yet!!!
I still had tons of questions…
- What Are The Menus For???
- What is an SEO?
- How do I make my blog pretty?
